An American pine 6 board sea chest, New England States, circa 1820-50. Dovetailed chest with hinged lid that opens to interior with til on left side. Lid with applied molding on front and sides. Base with applied molding and skids on bottom. Wood brackets with carved star medallion and original painted black rope beckets. The right becket is broken and now off the chest, but is retained and comes with the chest. Also retains the original cast brass butt hinges, chest lock and keep. Old varnished finish with some worn off on front edge from use. Measures 19 inches deep X 43 inches wide and 19 1/2 inches tall. Stenciled on the interior side of the lid "MAGGY WILKINSON."
The rope becket on the right side of the sea chest was broken in half, but all of the pieces were present. We repaired the becket by re-attaching the two sections using a turk's head knot. We also added a turk's head knot to the oher becket so both sides would match. Though the becket is once again whole, this is a cosmetic repair and will not hold the weight of the chest.
