An exceptional six spoke, 42 inch WWII era ship's wheel manufactured by the American Engineering Co., Philadelphia as marked on the inlaid brass maker’s plaque in the rim. Features a solid brass hub and alternating wood inlay pattern wheel and oak spokes and handles. Mint condition!
American Engineering Co. was an active business up to 1947 when it became a subsidiary of Hayes Manufacturing Co., of Grand Rapids, MI. There are some reflections on the Internet of its history as a supplier to shipbuilders. A book listed on the company indicates that it was created sometime before 1913 as a consolidation of Williamson Brothers Co. of Philadelphia and American Ship Windlass Co., of Providence, RI
