GARRY CERRONE

Marine artist Garry Cerrone's model boats are fabricated from scale lumber also made in his studio. Garry Cerrone was born in New Jersey in 1946 in a town on the banks of the Delaware River. Surrounded by water it was natural for him to gravitate toward "Messing about in boats". By the age of fourteen he was already repairing and building small boats. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Rhode Island (1969) and a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Rinehart School of Sculpture(1971). He currently is a senior art teacher at the Park School of Baltimore specializing in Ceramics, Jewelry , Wood Working and Sculpture. He is also on the Arts faculty at Towson University of Towson, MD and has also taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. His works have been shown locally and regionally. Garry has been a free lance commercial artist, carpenter, playground designer and boat restorer. For the last 15 years he has devoted much of his time toward professional model making both in trains and boats. After skippering the John Gregory, a traditionally built deadrise Hooper Island drake tail, as an academic research vessel, Garry got hooked on Chesapeake Bay workboat models. He currently sails his restored classic Pearson Ariel out of Baltimore, MD.

Some things about my models

Marine artist Garry Cerrone's models reflect the poesy of use. I love the patina of use. Tools whose handles are worn to reflect the users hand. Banjo heads with a pattern of how the player strummed the strings. Door sills and stair treads worn to reflect the thousands of footfalls that have crossed them. To me these are visual poetry . In my models I try to capture that same essence. Boats that are respected and cared for but well used. Boats that show the patina of use, the effects of the weather and time but still convey to you that they are loved by their users. My models all reflect this poesy of use. With stains of rust, peeling paint, graying sun bleached wood. They are loaded with detail, most created in my studio by scratch building , casting or other techniques. All model boats are fabricated from scale lumber also made in my studio.
