An American Mahogany & Maple Veneer Document Box, Central Eastern States, probably Pennsylvania, second quarter of the19th century. Rectangular box with hinged lid and mahogany veneered top with a pair of matching inlaid maple and mahogany nautical stars in circle. Document box sides and back are fashioned using choice tiger and bird's eye maple veneers on poplar secondary wood. Brass hinges appear to be original and are covered with wood facings. Retains the original lock and keep, but the keep cotter ways are missing.
This box survives in good original condition but does have places along both sides where pieces of maple veneer are missing. (A simple repair by any cabinet restoration shop). The document box measures 15" wide X 8" deep and 5 3/4" tall.
