First quarter of the 20th century boxed marine compass manufactured by E. S. Ritchie & Sons and retailed by Geo. H. Bibber, Gloucester, Boston. 3 1/8 inch gimbaled dry card compass mounted in it's original machine dovetailed wood box with slide lid. Box measures 4 1/2 X 4 1/2 X 3 1/4 inches and retains it's original stained surface. Compass #65207. Printed linen cloth compass face. Still in good working order.

The merchant George H. Bibber was listed in business in Gloucester in U.S. Coast Guard census in 1920 at 161 Main Street. Research indicates that he sold navigational instruments, navigational maps and chandelry supplies and was also a jeweler. Sold merchandise to the Gloucester fishermen circa 1920.
