A fine early Zanzibar chest from the late 18th or early 19th century. Made from Sudanese teak, this chest is decorated with intricate patterns formed from brass studs, and hammered and pierced brass sheets. Interior with cast brass hinges and fitted til on the right side. Three lower drawers are fitted into the lower front case. Heavy brass handles with batwing back plates are located on each end and the chest rests on four removable shaped feet, designed for transporting and travel. Length: 41 Height: 19 inches (on feet) Depth: 19.

CONDITION: The two lid side moldings are missing and small wood and brass sheet losses in various areas. Retains a wonderful old wood and brass patina.

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, (1631 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site.
