The General Hunter was first built as a topsail schooner, but was altered to a brig with the outbreak of the War of 1812. She is shown opposite the fort constructed to protect her naval base at the mouth of the Detroit River in advance of an approaching squall. This ship recently made archaeological news in 2007 when her wreck was found on a beach in Lake Huron; after she was driven ashore as a captured U.S. transport in 1816.
