A solid bronze and brass WWII era US Navy Bureau of Ships, standard No. 5, mark 2 3 inch varsol filled top reading lifeboat compass made by C.G. CONN. LTD. in Elkhart, Indiana as inscribed on the manufacturers plate located on the side of the compass. The serial number is NXSS - 36876. Just like full sized shipís binnacle compass, itís polarity can be adjusted for accuracy with self-contained corrector systems. Measures 5″ tall with a 4.5″ diameter compass ring and weighs just shy of 8 pounds. The heavy brass lid when removed is fastened with a thick brass chain to the binnacle base so not to get lost. Recently polished and lacquered. Makes a wonderful tabletop conversation piece. There is an air bubble in the compass, but the compass works fine and is a very accurate instrument.
