Largest size, early 20th century solid oak ship's rigging fid, used to unravel knots. Varnish finish. Measures 36 inches in length, 5 inches in diameter at the widest point. Weighs 8 1/4 pounds!  Mint condition. 

The fid was the traditional tool of the sailor, used to loosen and tighten knots. It was used to separate the strands of rope for splicing.
