•••••
A superior example of a battle rattle or alarm ratchet, American or English, mid-19th century. This particular example is of the highest quality in design, featuring an all-walnut teardrop-shaped body with an oak tine (cog) and brass covers, which house weights for ease of spinning. The turned handle was designed with a series of reeded lines in the center (for grip) and with a button-shaped handle end. The reeding is repeated in between the brass covers. Shorter in length than most, measuring 7 1/2 inches in length and 6 1/2 inches wide (at handle).1 3/4 inch thick at widest point. Weighs 0.75 pounds. Unmarked. A beautiful example of a small scale battle rattle, notibly made by a skilled furniture maker. Excellent condition! VERY LOUD!

“Battle rattles” were noisemakers, used historically by naval crews and watchmen by smaller Navy vessels to alert sailors of a boarding attempt or other emergency. Most measure approximately 11 inches in overall length. Battle Rattles were primarily made of oak or some other hardwood and when turned or spun on the handle made a loud repetitive gatlin-gun like sound which was a call to General Quarters for all members of the crew. According to our research, there were two models or types of battle rattle, a large two-handled one affixed to and located on the main deck and smaller ones used by individual sailors designated to sound the alarm. Most all battle rattles were a fairly simple construction made with a combination of wooden pegs or dowels holding everything in place, and to be easily disassembled to make repairs when needed.

Other rattles were used by other branches of the military service as well as policemen and lighthouse keepers!

Mid 19th c. British Police Alarm Ratchet, in walnut and brass with oak tines (slightly spit), unmarked, 8 1/2" x 6" x 2". Working condition, nice wear from use.
