A fine floor standing tripod telescope made by King Instruments of England, as engraved on the ocular end of the main tube, "KING INSTRUMENTS, BEXHILL ON SEA, ENGLAND #47."  This outstanding optical device dates to the first quarter of the 20th century. It features a beautiful mahogany veneered main tube with a focusing apparatus operated by a large knurled knob on the right hand side of the barrel and a ribbed, flared eyepiece for viewing is at the ocular end of the draw tube. The lens created a highly magnified image of the viewing object. The large objective lens brass cover is engraved "ABERCROMBIE & FITCH CO., EST. 1892" the famous New York retail outdoorsman store that this fine instrument was manufactured for. The letters "AWB" is engraved in the center, most likely the initials of the original owner of the telescope. The telescope is mounted and supported on its three mahogany legged tripod with brass fittings and rotates to a full 360 degree. As configured the telescope measures 46 3/4 inches long overall.
The main barrel is 36 inches long. The objective lens is 3 inches in diameter. Survives in good original condition with only minor buckling to the mahogany veneer. Perfect for use in a room with a view!
