A fine early to mid 19th century American walnut and white pine portable writing desk, probably Pennsylvania or Valley of Virginia. Desk with top surface of walnut with a light wood (probably holly) inlaid American bald eagle grasping a banner in it's mouth and vines in each interior corner, surrounded by a triple border of broken line inlays in rectangular patterns. The back and sides feature carved gallery of open-fret running vines.The hinged top opens to a sloped felt-covered and folding pine writng surface and interior with a back section fitted with three small drawers. Below the upper hinged writing surface when open reveals a series of fitted compartments, each with fitted lid. Dimensions: Width: 18 1/2 inches, Depth: 11 1/4 inches Height: 7 inches to top of gallery.
