Antique folk art hooked rug (fabric on burlap) depicting a whaling scene of the New Bedford ship 'Sally Ann', New Bedford, 1843.  "Sally Ann" on the nameboard on the hull of the ship.  "NEW BEDFORD" is inscribed on the upper left hand corner and dated 1843 on the upper right. A breaching whale is in the lower foreground. Some holes and wool loss around edges from age. The rug measures 31 x 40 inches. 

The ship "Sally Ann" was built in Braintree, MA. (312 tons). Her first voyage was in 1826. She recorded 16 voyages, all out of New Bedford and was lost in the Pacific in 1853. American Master, Jabez S. Hathaway.
