AMVER stands for the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System, a worldwide voluntary reporting system sponsored by the United States Coast Guard.
It is a computer-based global ship-reporting system used by search and rescue authorities to coordinate assistance for people in distress at sea.
Participating ships submit sail plans, position reports, and arrival reports to help rescue coordinators identify the best-suited vessels nearby for a response.
The system began in 1958 and acts like a high-seas "neighborhood watch". (Wikipedia)
