•••••
large size, early to mid 20th century solid oak ship's rigging fid, used to unravel knots. Varnish finish. Measures 30 inches in length, 4 inches in diameter at the widest point. Weighs 6 pounds! Shipyard used condition with losses. From the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia. Great item for a Maritime Museum display!

The fid was the traditional tool of the sailor, used to loosen and tighten knots. It was used to separate the strands of rope for splicing.   The fid was used as a club and a temporary pull handle.
