Canted dovetail mahogany cutlery box featuring an exceptionally carved, shaped center divider with cylindrical handle and finger-cutout below and scrolled ends. Height 6.25". Length 13.5". Width 8". Punch carved on the bottom: "MADE BY C.G.M. STINSON, BARK MANTO, AT SEA, 1851." Also, faintly knifed into the bottom right corner: "101 L: 34."
Our research has discovered an Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild dated 26 October, 1835, the Bark Manto of Boston, where of Gardner (Joseph Gardner) is Master, burthen 283 tons and 5/95ths of a ton, bound from the Port of Cronstadt (Russia) for Boston. We were not able to establish any other sailing dates of the Bark 'Manto."
