An American marine liquid-filled compass, the printed dial inscribed 'E.S. Ritchie & Sons, Boston' and 'Max Kuner Co. Seattle', within a black painted gimbal mounted case, numbered 50408. This classic marine instrument features a 3-inch compass with 2 1/4 inch glass viewing port, is fitted to its original mahogany machine-dovetailed box, retaining it's original varnished finish.

The Max Kuner Company was a historic Seattle marine outfitting and nautical instrument firm founded in 1897 by Max Kuner during the Klondike Gold Rush. Located originally near the U.S. Customs Office and later moving through prominent waterfront and downtown addresses like the Lumber Exchange Building, the company specialized as a "nautical optician," crafting and repairing watches, chronometers, compasses, sextants, and supplying official U.S. Government marine charts and maps.
