An American-made early-twentieth-century small boat, liquid-filled compass marked M.C.& Co. This classic compass features a 3-inch compass with a 2 1/4 inch glass viewing port, housed in its original black-painted brass bowl, suspended on a gimbal ring with the composition card that states, "M.C.& Co." This classic marine instrument is fitted in its original mahogany machine-dovetailed box, retaining its old, worn, varnished finish. The box is fitted with its original removable lid. Weighs 2 lbs. Box dimensions: 3 1/2"H x 4.5"W x 4.5"D. In good working order!

CONDITION: Surface wear on the mahogany box and compass gimbal ring. The box top latch hooks are missing. Liquid air bubble in compass.

HISTORY: M.C.& Co. refers to the Marine Compass Company, a firm that was established in Hanover, Massachusetts, in 1910. The owners of this firm purchased E. S. Ritchie & Son in 1951.
